Hello and warmest wishes to you all during this vibrant season. It’s been a while since we’ve touched base, and I’ve been on quite the journey—cultivating my independent practice, caring for the trails that lace our mountains, championing the timeless strains of classical music, and endeavoring to enhance healthcare systems nationwide.

An Update on Media Reports

Recent headlines have cast a shadow over the work at Intermountain Deaconess in Montana—a distinct entity from Intermountain Health System in Utah. The reports you might have seen lacked a certain depth, and I’m here to provide that missing perspective.

The Montana Chapter

Efforts to improve essential aspects of the organization were met with unexpected resistance from a handful of individuals in leadership positions. Despite their pushback, the board and I remained steadfast in our commitment to uphold the original vision of the program—worth defending against all odds.

Behind the Scenes

Before the arrival of my team, records indicated a significant staff turnover, which was a concern long acknowledged by the board. This was not just a matter of compensation but a deeper need for training and support, as detailed in past staff feedback, which you can read about here: Intermountain Deaconess Board Statement

For a balanced view, I found the Montana Free Press to offer a clear timeline of events that align with my experience.

Standing with Integrity

The narrative that the leadership team and I were pushing for closure is simply not true. We worked tirelessly to keep the doors open, crafting detailed recommendations based on comprehensive reviews and interviews—though, regrettably, these were not recognized.

A Vote of Confidence

Arriving in the spring of 2023, I knew the challenges ahead, having seen similar situations in the past. The board’s commitment, often unsung, was the beacon that guided our tough decisions. They, too, deserve a spotlight for their unwavering dedication.

Parting Thoughts

When I stepped into this role, the agreement was clear—an interim position with the possibility of extension. As we positioned the organization for stability, it became clear that it was time for a permanent CEO to take the helm, a role I had never eyed for the long term.

A Look at the Label

Labeling me as a “controversial leader” misses the mark. My career has been about embracing challenges others shy away from, akin to rushing into burning buildings, if you will. The outcomes have been rewarding, often life-saving, and always in service of those most in need.

Looking Forward

When defensiveness and resistance surface, it often signals the need for transparency. It’s my hope that Intermountain Deaconess will welcome the clarity that comes from thorough examination, for the benefit of all involved.

To the Future

As I gear up for more frequent updates and a snowy retreat to Montana, I look forward to continuing this dialogue and sharing the journey with you. Your time and engagement are greatly appreciated, and I can’t wait to bring more stories and insights from the field.

Thank you for taking a moment to read through this update. Here’s to moving forward with grace and grit.
